For a class this week I had to watch this video:

It got me thinking… too many people don’t think for themselves.

I’m specifically thinking of my physics students. Too many of them don’t stop to take a look at what they’re doing. I can walk them through a step by step process of solving a problem and if I ask a question about the very last thing I said (essentially asking that they repeat what I said) they look at me blankly or throw out a random topic “buzzword”.  It’s so frustrating. I want them to understand why it is they’re being asked to do these experiments. this week I nearly cried at their behavior in class. It makes me sad that they could care so little. They are also horrible horrible suck ups. All they want is the grade. They’ll quibble over half a point on something trivial. They ask me for help in a manner that they just want to be given what they need to get the grade, but not understand the material. thing is, they won’t get the grade come exams if they don’t understand.

The video also reminded me of many highly controlling professors or teachers I’ve had in the past.  In Jr. High I had a teacher who insisted everyone’s handwriting be the same. She took off points if the capital and lower-case letters didn’t follow a strict 2:1 size ratio. Yes, I’m being serious. It was absurd. I can see the premise was wanting neatly written, legible assignments, but this was too much. It didn’t matter if the work was legible.

Last quarter I had a professor who placed the majority of the grade emphasis on formatting of a paper, and not on contact. I loathe quantity over quality professors. If I had gotten comments regarding my research or my writing then I would understand, but not the formatting. Worse yet, that professor seemed to be against my bringing my own views, analysis, and predictions into the paper.

This quarter looks promising. At least, I think my professors are promising. these past three weeks have been difficult, yes, but refreshing. Here’s hoping.

I haven’t written in a while. There are a few things to cover I suppose. mainly, classes started up again and they’re already hell. It’s only week 2. Went to Swing & Soul last weekend. It was a fun weekend. I miss being there. It was warm. I pretty much got sick the moment I got back to Rochester. I’m glad break is only a week away.

Today was sweet. Caroline and I had a fun drive to a nearby town and went vintage-ing. We got lost a bit on the way there and back. Ended up at the same place both times and didn’t even know it. I guess you had to be there  :-p

Matt Glyn came to visit Caroline today. The three of us cooked dinner. It was delicious though we had quite a few issues with a pork loin that seemed to refuse to cook.

Then we headed of to DC’s Jam cellar. The venue is beautiful. It’s this large old victorian style house. The floor was quite nice. Just the right amount of stickyness and slickness. I ran into yet another person I knew. Soo was my wonderful lindy hop pimp for the night. She introduced me to anyone I should be dancing with and didn’t know. I barely stood still all night and it’s thanks to her. Notable dancers present included Naomi, Nina, Lee, Luke, and Adam Bohemer. I really wanted to dance with Adam (since the last time I saw him was at my very first workshop event). I just never got the chance. I was always dancing, and so was he. It was a great night. I wish I could dance in DC more. I  hope DC dancers know  how lucky they are to have  such a lively scene.

I got to Caroline’s at about 4-ish this afternoon. Spent the afternoon with her and her parents. It was a very lovely evening, which only got lovelier with some dancing. The Austin grill was a diner / bar type restaurant with the dancing going on in one area. Overall, it reminded me of the way the old Lindy Jam venue (Dance Encounters). A small number of dancers could fill up the floor, but it could (and did) accommodate a large number of dancers nicely. The DJ turned out to be a friend I made at Boston Tea Party this past year, Jason Lancaster. He was my parter in the Novice Jack and Jill. I also ran into Alan, from Knoxville, who I met at Southern Belle in September. Small world. Met Dory and Sommer and a few others. Everyone was very nice and welcoming. It felt like Rochester, just some different faces. I can see why Caroline likes it.

Jam Cellar tomorrow.

I’m visiting Caroline (near Baltimore) for a couple of days. We have some dancey things planned for tonight and tomorrow. Tonight we’ll be at the Austin Grill in Baltimore, and tomorrow night we’ll be at Jam Cellar in DC. I’m really excited about this. More to come. Yay!

Oh, and if you’re wondering, I’ll be back in the city on Wednesday. Fram on Thursday, and Solomon Douglas on Saturday. Back in Rochester Sunday.

Ever feel like it’s time for a change? I get like this about once a year. My solution is to rearrange the furniture in my room. Works like a charm. I enjoy having a new workspace. Plus, it’s the ultimate way to go through all my stuff and sort out what I need and don’t need. It’s a good feeling – a blank slate for my room. I’ll turn it into a mess in a day or two I’m sure.

This past weekend was Steven & Virginie’s ten year anniversary workshop weekend in Rochester. It was quite amazing. I got to spend time with some good friends I don’t see too often, as well as I got to see Brooks again for the first time since Southern Belle. It was such a fun weekend. I had a wonderful time. It was only my second S&V workshop in Rochester, and last year’s, my first, was actually a difficult weekend for me. I recall not being in the best of moods, having a very tough time with the workshops, and all that affected my dancing during the social dancing events. This year was completely different. I felt like I could actually absorb the information from classes, and I had so much fun at the dances. I wish the weekend didn’t have to end so soon (especially not transition into final exam week). A very sweet moment at the end of Sunday classes – Richard  and Esther nearly literally passed the Steven & Virginie / workshop torch to Groove Juice Swing. It was quite touching. No matter where I end up, I’ll always come back to Rochester for S&V. It’s a must. It’s my dance home.
